How To Stun Minnows

minnows
Minnows for food??? Catching minnows today is something that most people do for bait not for eating. Minnows can provide food in a SHTF situation in a couple of ways. Either as bait of course, but don't discard the idea of eating them directly. Minnows are a lot easier to catch than any other fish. You can spend hours trying to catch a single bass or catfish to eat. Minnows shouldn't be so difficult.

Minnows instinctively know that swimming around in open water unprotected and unhidden is asking for trouble. So minnows typically stay near shore. This makes them so much easier to catch. We have already outlined in the preceding page how to build traps to catch fish and even specifically minnows. However, there is another method worth mentioning. That method is clubbing.

Clubbing for lack of a better name is using a big stick or club to stun or kill the minnows. Simply find a large baseball bat like stick, preferably a bit longer though. Then, walk along the shoreline looking for minnows. When you see one or more strike the water as hard as you can. Aim directly for the minnow. Even if you miss by a little bit, the minnow will likely still be stunned or even killed. Gather your minnows and you have a quick source of protein that you can cook for supper.

Simply gut the minnows and cook however you like. You can even forgo gutting with a knife and simply squeeze out the guts with your fingers. Of course, if you want you can use the minnows as bait for bigger fish you can do that too.
