If SHTF and the entire world as we know it comes to a swift end we will be tasked with first surviving, but then rebuilding society from scratch. One of the hallmarks of cultures that advanced technologically while they existed is written language.
Written language gives us the ability to pass down knowledge and build on it. The ability to pass down knowledge in written form is key to progressing any civilization out of the caveman stage. Knowledge can be passed down, laws can be written and preserved and a note to a loved one on where you went while they were out collecting water at the creek. Seems minor, but what if you become injured or trapped. Knowing your approximate location could be key to your survival.
But, I digress. Obviously writing is important and ink is something you will need to make at some point. So let's get down to it. The process is actually very easy and doesn't need to involve a chemistry lab either.
This article will focus on one of the easiest inks to make and it only contains three simple ingredients that are all available from nature. We will call this ink, Berry Ink because, you guessed it, it is made primarily from berries.
To make Berry Ink you will need some berries such as blackberries,
salt and some
vinegar. Follow the links to learn how to make salt and vinegar from nature.
What color berries you have will determine the color of ink that you make. You will need a couple of handfuls of berries, a 1/2 tsp vinegar and a 1/2 tsp of salt.
Once you have gathered your ingredients crush up your berries and pour the juice into a sealable container. If you have the ability to strain the berries through a fine mesh cloth, then do so. Add the vinegar and salt and stir until all of the salt has dissolved.
That is all there is to it. This is a simple and basic ink that will get you started.
