Platinum is a dense, malleable, ductile, highly unreactive, very expensive, light gray metal. Platinum is one of the least reactive metals. It has remarkable corrosion resistance.
Platinum is extremely rare and occurs in some nickel and copper ores. Only a few hundred tons are produced each year. Platinum is used in catalytic converters, laboratory equipment such as crucibles, electrical contacts and electrodes, platinum resistance thermometers, some dentistry equipment, and jewelry.
Platinum has a melting temperature of 3220F (1770C).
