Phosphorus exists in two major forms, white phosphorus and red phosphorus and never naturally as a free element because it is highly reactive. Phosphorus is not found free in nature, but it is extensively distributed in many minerals, mainly phosphates. Phosphate rock is the main source of this Phosphorus.
White phosphorus gradually changes to red phosphorus when exposed to oxygen or light. White phosphorus emits a faint glow when exposed to oxygen.
Uses: Phosphorus is mostly used in the Fertilizer industry but has limited use as an alloy in Bronze and in the production of matches as well as other niche applications.
Phosphorus has a melting temperature of 110F (44C).
