Tin Information

tin
Tin is a malleable, ductile silvery-white metal. Tin does not occur as the native element but must be extracted from various ores. Tin is most often used and an alloy to other metals. Minerals with Tin are almost always associated with granite, where the Tin is found at levels below 1%.

Tin's is commonly used as an alloy in lead as solder. Also, Tin bonds readily to iron and is used for coating lead, zinc and steel to prevent corrosion. Most metal pipes in a pipe organ are of varying amounts of a tin/lead alloy, with 50/50 being the most common. Interestingly, Tin is also used to stabilize PVC pipe, otherwise it woould quickly degrade.

Tin has a melting temperature of 232C (450F).
